We travel to the Riverland with locals, Sarah Dowdell and Tom Freeman, owners of Wikladene, Woolshed Brewery and find out the best things to do in the region!

Wilkadene

Once a famous wheat and sheep station, Wilkadene is now the home to the Woolshed Brewery, just a short drive from the Riverland town of Paringa. Owners Tom Freeman and Sarah Dowdell have opened up an on-site cellar door from the century-old woolshed, overlooking an exclusive section of the River

Wilkadene also offers accommodation options including a three-bedroom cottage and a fleet of three luxurious houseboats. Staying on site provides opportunities to explore the property’s history or explore the myriad of local creeks and waterways.

Cruising and Camping

As lovers of the river, cruising and camping on the Murray is one of Tom and Sarah’s favourite past times. “Whether we’re paddle boarding, bush walking, going for a cruise in our dinghy or camping, we just love being out on the water or near it. We love being far away up river with no one else around except the birds and wildlife. It is so grounding to be surrounded by nature.”

Retail Therapy

For something a little more metropolitan, Sarah recommends a visit to Renmark for some retail therapy. With a great range of shops ranging from clothing, homewares, garden stores and more, it’s an ideal town to shop til you drop. “My favourite shop is Lucca & Co Boutique. They have an amazing range of clothes for all styles and sizes, as well as shoes, bag, sunglasses, bathers, candles and kid’s clothing. They have the most amazing range of basics and everything is so well priced. You never leave empty handed!

Eat

For a fantastic eat, Sarah recommends River Jack’s Café in Berri. With stunning views of the water and Geek-inspired cuisine, it’s easy to see why. “Each day they have something new and exciting on the menu. Everything is homemade and delicious. The owner Nikki is a scream and always makes you laugh.”
