Passionate abut food and fresh country produce from a very early age, it was a natural progression for Rachel McMillan of Scoop SA to become a specialist consultant in food seasonality. Working closely with both growers and chefs in the region to deliver the freshest and tastiest produce all year, Scoop SA is a purveyor of Fleurieu Peninsula’s quality fresh fine foods, which are “scooped” from the growers and farmers of the region. As a resident of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Rachel is familiar with the seasonal variations in produce and is an integral member of the local foodie community. We travel to the Fleurieu and live like a local with Rachel.
Pipi at Middleton
high on Rachel’s list for weekend breakfasts is Pipi at Middleton, a location she recommends for its food and coffee, not to mention the view and the vibe. “Pipi’s always have the best local, seasonal produce and flavours with steaming coffee, it’s how I get my weekend off to a great start. Surronded by their lush gardens I can feel myself unwinding and chowing down on my favourite za’tar pumpkin fritters. Ronnie the border collie, loves a selfie not to mention a cuddle in the courtyard for all the dog lovers.”
Sculpture Encounters
Sculpture Encounters, the new art trail on Granite Island at Victor Harbor is another of Rachel’s favourite spots on the Fleurieu. “Ten amazing sculptures have been placed on Granite Island, so now there’s another reason to walk the trail. The views are spectacular from the island but I love there is now a showcase of international artwork dotted across the landscape. My favourite is ‘Ocean Lace’ by Britt Mikkelson which is inspired by beach combing, something I love to do with my daughter, Alexandra.”
Waverley Estate
Rachel recommends a stay at Waverley Estate. “Accommodation at Waverley Estate ticks all the boxes for me. I love the decor in its classic French styling – it almost feels like coming home. You can swim in the solar heated pool, gather around the fire pit with a glass of wine and relax with friends after a big day enjoying what the south coast has to offer. I recommend inviting your favourite people to share the 1856 bluestone house that sleeps five. There’s so much space here you won’t feel crowded.”
Thunderbird
Thunderbird, Port Elliot’s new restaurant and bar hotspot, gets the tick of approval from Rachel as a destination where you can pop in for beautiful food. “Thunderbird has everyone talking for all the right reasons. They have nailed the feel of creating a space that’s full of warmth and rustic vibes and this is matched by the amazing menu. I loved snacking on tapas and a delicious glass of wine. I suggest making a beeline for the beautiful leather couches, you won’t want to leave!”
