Nestled between the Barossa towns of Lyndoch and Williamstown is the farm of Michael Wohlstadt – who’s also known as The Dairyman.

Embracing old farming methods with a modern spin, Michael raises small herds of heritage-bred pigs and cows, producing a premium range of pork and dairy delights.

His 80 acre farm is also home to two farm stay cottages, each combining modern, edgy design with the picturesque surrounding landscape of rolling hills, free ranging livestock and local vineyards. A stay at the Dairyman’s Cottage or the Chaff House includes breakfast provisions from the farm and an afternoon walk to feed the pigs.

Live like a local

On any given Saturday morning, you’ll find Michael manning The Dairyman stall at the Barossa Farmers Market at Angaston – a location he favours as a producer and as a social venue. “It’s a great place to catch up with friends for breakfast and taste forgotten flavours. You get to see a great cross section of the local community – people watching is my favourite part of going to the market. For those visiting the Barossa on a weekend, the markets are a must-do and I recommend getting there before 10am.”

Another Dairyman favourite is Seppeltsfield – a grand estate of vineyards, manicured gardens and imposing architecture that includes a cellar door, award-winning restaurant and even its own craft and design studio. “The Seppeltsfield story is over 170 years old and clearly and dramatically legible in the landscape and buildings. Make sure you allow half a day to browse, eat and taste your way around.”

When hunger calls, Michael’s recommendation for good honest fare is Casa Carboni in Angaston. A relatively new addition to the Barossa food scene, this restaurant-come-cooking-school has made big waves among locals and visitors alike. “I love Casa Carboni for its casual and authentic atmosphere. Chef Matteo serves simple and delicious food – much of it sourced from the Barossa Farmers Market each week.”
